Facts About Dual Citizenship

Over 2,000 applications for dual citizenship have been approved by the Immigration and Emigration Department during the period this service was suspended by the last Government. Most of the 2,224 applications approved by the Department at the time, with clearance from the Defence Ministry, were received before the suspension came into effect in January, 2011, a spokesperson said. Following a Cabinet decision in late 2014, the facility was reinstated with a revised procedure. The process involved an enlarged fee and a five-year compulsory period of permanent residency before being eligible to proceed to citizenship. However, the new government which was appointed after the January Presidential election, revoked the need to be a permanent resident but the revised fee was retained. As a result the main applicant for dual citizenship must pay Rs.250,000 plus Rs.50,000 for the spouse and each dependent child. They have received 1,320 applications for Sri Lankan dual citizenship since the service was re-launched in March this year out of which nearly 190 applications have been cleared and issued certificates.

Summer Fruit and Lime Shrub
Popular in colonial times, a shrub is a sweetened-fruit and vinegar syrup. It is mainly used as a drink mixer, but you can also add it to brighten a pan sauce for chicken and pork, add it to whipped cream on top of a fruity dessert, I also use it to toss a salad with the addition of a little olive oil. Refrigerate in a jar for up to two months. I hope you enjoy the versatility of the shrub.

Ingredients.
3 cups Berries(rinsed and pricked over) OR any fruit of
                          your choice washed and diced
1 cup granulated sugar
3/4 cup Champagne or white wine vinegar
1 teaspoon grated Lime zest (only the outer green)

Method
In a 4- quart saucepan combine the ingredients with 3 cups of water and bring to a boil over medium-high heat.
Reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer until the fruit has completely broken down, about twenty minutes. Let it cool completely.Puree this with an immersion blender
strain through a fine sieve over a bowl, pressing hard on the solids to extract as much liquid as possible. Pour into your jar and refrigerate.
