In the early hours of the 21st May, 2016, Jayanthi Kuru-Utumpala summited the world’s highest mountain – Mt Everest. In doing so she became the first Sri Lankan to reach the top of the world. She was accompanied to beyond Camp 4 by climbing partner Johann Peries. At 29,029ft above sea level, Mt Everest stands over three times taller than Mt Pidurutalagala, Sri Lanka’s highest peak, and represents a formidable challenge to experienced mountaineers across the globe. Three climbers died in three days on Mount Everest, including a Sherpa and two Westerners. Two other climbers are missing.
