A batch of 55 woman soldiers joined active duty at a Passing Out ceremony held at the Sri Lanka Army’s 4th Signal Corps Parade Ground in Anuradhapura on Wednesday (18th December).

This is the first ever batch of woman recruits of mixed cultures to Pass Out and join national service in the annals of Sri Lankan military history. It also reflects the inroads which have been made under the post war reconciliation process in promoting social co-habitation and peace building.

The batch of 45 Tamil and 10 Sinhala recruits who were recruited to the Army in August had undergone a three month training prior to their Passing Out. They were recruited from Batticoloa, Wanni, Mullithivu and Kandy.

In addition to the standard military training the recruits were also given a basic training in non military subjects such as beauty culture, floral arrangement, interior decoration and bridal dressing.

The night Passing Out was graced by Security Forces Commander-Wanni Major General Boniface Perera.

Woman recruit Divya Dharmanayagan was adjudged the best recruit. The Tamil woman soldiers will be posted to serve in the Northern areas to assist in the peace building and reconciliation programmes presently underway there.
